Throughout our lives we often stop doing the things we should be doing in order to become successful. We don’t stop because we are lazy or because we lack what it takes to become successful. We stop because we have doubts about ourselves and our abilities to succeed.

We have these doubts because many of us have people all around us telling us we don’t have what it takes. Some of these people are well meaning and some of them are just people looking to make themselves appear bigger or better by making others look smaller. We all know these people and we all know what their words can do to us. But I’m here to tell you not to listen to them.

I’m telling you that you do have what it takes in order to achieve great things in your life. You only have to learn how to believe in yourself. And sometimes that is hard.

But the world is full of people who have achieved great things despite having huge limitation forced upon them. People who have faced and overcame adversity despite great challenges. These people are not much different than you or I. But they have one thing that many people struggle to achieve. They believe in themselves and their abilities. Even more important, they were not afraid to fail.

Let me say that again. They were not afraid to fail.

Being afraid to fail often keeps us from even trying anything new or trying to achieve even the smallest goal or achievement. But failure is part of life and we often need to fail in order to learn and grow. From the time we were born we have experienced failure and learned from it. We fell several times before we learned how to stand and finally to walk. We talked in gibberish until we learned words and their meaning. There are a whole load of things we failed at in the beginning and then soon mastered.

Do you think Tiger Woods hit his first golf ball 300 yards? Do you think Michael Jordan never missed a shot? Both of these people, along with every single one of us, has failed at many things before we learned how to do them. And yet we survived and often thrived. It is only when we let failure rule our decisions that we fail to achieve our goals.

If you are afraid of failure, then we need to conquer that fear before we can move forward in life. We do that by trying little things and proving to ourselves that we can do them. Sometimes we even try little things and experience failure so we see that failure itself sometimes carries little consequences. In other words, we learn that sometimes failure is no big deal.

Notice I said we try little things at first. We do not get behind the controls of an airplane and try to fly without proper training. That kind of failure DOES carry some pretty stiff consequences! But going after a new job and not getting it does not cripple one’s career. Or trying something new and learning from our failures makes us smarter, more knowledgeable and more prepared for what comes next.

Most of our limitations are self imposed. We need to blast through those limitations and prove to ourselves that we are better than we think we are. Try new things. Experience success and embrace failure and learn from it. Think about the things you have already achieved. No matter how small or seemingly insignificant some of those thing might seem, those are your successes.

We build upon our successes and learn from our failures. There is no shame in failure. If we learn from our failures and mistakes then we really have not failed at all. We have grown as much from our failures as we have grown from our successes. Sometimes even more. But we never know until we try.

I believe you can do whatever you set your mind to in this life. I don’t think many of us, myself included, have reached our full potential. I think we all can do more or accomplish greater things. All we need to do is try. And if things do not go as we hoped, no big deal. We learn from it and move on.

And then one day we will look back and be amazed at what we have accomplished and how far we have come. And that will be a feeling that will be amazing!

You can do this. What ever “this’ might be, I truly believe that you can achieve it. You just have to believe in yourself as well.
